1000 Books Before Kindergarten

A reading journey for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Sharing books with young children builds language, imagination, and school-readiness skills. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages families to make reading part of everyday life, one story at a time.

This program is for children born in or after 2021, and who reside in Middlesex County.

Why 1000 Books?

A child’s early years are a critical time for brain development. Reading together helps children:

  • Build vocabulary
  • Strengthen listening and attention skills
  • Develop early literacy skills
  • Discover the joy of stories

If you read:

  • 1 book a day, you can reach 1000 books in about 3 years
  • 3 books a day, you can reach 1000 books in about 1 year

How It Works

It couldn't be easier to participate! There's only four simple steps:

  1. Register your child at any Middlesex County Library branch.
  2. Read together - any book, any time.
  3. Track your reading using a reading log.
  4. Visit the library to celebrate milestones along the way.

Every book counts, including:

  • Library books
  • Books you own
  • Favourite stories read again and again
